Exploring Japan by Cruise: A Relaxed Way to Discover Japan

Planning a Trip to Japan? Why a Cruise Could Be the Perfect Choice

Cara Lynch on 02 Nov 2026

Before I started my career in travel, I worked as a Mental Health Coach and Counsellor, supporting people with mental and physical health conditions to ensure their needs were met so they could remain in employment and enjoy life to its full potential. Since becoming a Travel Counsellor, I’ve realised just how valuable my listening skills are when it comes to researching, planning and booking travel experiences for people.

I recently received an enquiry from a client looking to plan a dream trip for 2027. They’ve experienced some serious health issues over the past couple of years, one of the side effects being that they struggle with their energy levels. On the other hand, these health challenges have given them a renewed zest for life, and they don’t take a single day for granted. Japan is high on their bucket list and, knowing that I’ve visited a couple of times myself, they came to me for some expert advice on how best to explore it.

Japan is one of my favourite places to visit. I find the culture fascinating, the scenery visually stunning, and it’s unlike anywhere else I’ve travelled. However, it’s not always the easiest destination to navigate. If you don’t speak Japanese, getting around can be tricky, and jumping on and off bullet trains with suitcases, trudging between hotels and staying just a few nights in each place can quickly become tiring. Which is why I suggested a cruise to my client.

Why a cruise is a great way to explore Japan

Cruising can be a fantastic way to explore a country. One of the beauties is unpacking once and sleeping in the same comfortable bed for the entire trip. You have the freedom to explore a destination during the day, then return to the ship and wake up somewhere new the next morning, without having to navigate public transport or worry about hauling your luggage. And not having to search for places to eat or translate menus using an app means you can spend more time enjoying the culture and beauty of the destination you’ve travelled so far to experience. For anyone considering a Japan cruise holiday, this can be a particularly appealing way to discover the country without the demands of organising every stage of the journey independently.

Discover Japan during cherry blossom season

For my client, a trip aboard Princess Cruises’ Japan Explorer, Cherry Blossoms cruise felt like the perfect fit. This 10-night Japan cruise aboard Sapphire Princess offers a wonderful opportunity to experience Japan’s diverse landscapes, rich history and fascinating culture, with the added bonus of travelling during the spring cherry blossom season. This Princess Cruises Japan itinerary is a lovely example of how a cruise can combine several destinations easily in one trip. Most importantly, it provides the opportunity to explore without the demands of constantly changing hotels, navigating train stations or managing luggage. My client can spend her days discovering somewhere new, then return to the comfort of her own cabin, enjoy a delicious meal and recharge ready for the next adventure. For someone who wants to make the most of every moment while being mindful of her energy levels, this cruise offers a lovely balance of exploration, comfort and relaxation.

Why personal holiday planning makes all the difference

As a Travel Counsellor, it’s my job to really listen to my clients, to get to know them and understand what they want and need from a travel experience, then find the right options for them. After some straightforward communication and a few tweaks along the way, I was able to arrange flights and a post-cruise stay that fitted my client’s schedule and expectations perfectly.

That’s where I think my counselling skills really come into their own. Communication is key in any relationship, and that includes the relationship between me and my clients! It’s about understanding what matters to someone, listening to their concerns and working together to find a solution that feels right for them.
