Family Holiday Mexico

Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun

My Honest Thoughts

Jennifer Stevens on 01 Jul 2023

We stayed at Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun not long after it opened in 2023 as a family, and overall we had a really lovely holiday. It is a big, modern resort with lots going on for children, plenty of pool space and that “new hotel” feel: smart rooms, fresh décor and impressive facilities.

Location, beach & seaweed

One thing I know many people are asking about at the moment is seaweed. When we stayed, the team at the hotel worked very hard to keep the beach clear and you could really see the effort that went into cleaning and maintaining the shoreline. We felt safe and comfortable on the beach and around the resort, and it was easy to relax as a family.

It is worth knowing that seaweed is a regional issue in Mexico and the wider Caribbean, rather than specific to this one hotel. Some stretches of coast can be more affected than others at certain times of year, and there are also areas that are usually much less impacted. If you like the idea of Mexico but are worried about this side of things, I am very happy to chat through other resorts and locations that might suit you better.

Food & dining

We found the buffet restaurant to be very good, especially for a family. There was plenty of choice, fresh options and something to keep everyone happy at breakfast and dinner.

The à la carte restaurants were fine but not outstanding in our experience. We enjoyed them and had some nice meals, but they did not quite have that “wow” factor you sometimes get elsewhere. I would describe them as perfectly acceptable rather than gourmet. If food is your absolute top priority, I can also suggest some alternative hotels in the area where the à la carte dining is a real highlight.

Evening entertainment

This was the one area where we felt things could be improved. There was evening entertainment, and some nights were genuinely very good and lively. However, it was not always consistent: some evenings felt a bit flat by comparison and we would have loved a more reliable programme with the same energy every night.

To be fair, we visited not long after the resort opened, so it is quite possible that this has been developed and polished since. For us, it did not spoil the holiday at all, but it is worth setting expectations that the entertainment felt stronger on some nights than others.

Overall family experience

Putting everything together, we had a great time as a family at Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun:

  • Modern, spacious resort with lots for children to do
  • We felt safe and well looked after
  • Good buffet, decent à la cartes
  • Beach well maintained, with visible efforts to manage seaweed
  • Evening entertainment enjoyable but a little hit‑and‑miss in terms of consistency

I would be very happy to chat in more detail about our experience here if you are considering it, and equally I can recommend other hotels and areas of Mexico that may suit you even better, especially if you:

  • Want particularly high‑end dining
  • Prefer a more boutique or quieter atmosphere
  • Are keen to minimise the chance of seaweed on the beach

Not all of Mexico has the same seaweed problem, and there are some lovely stretches of coastline and resorts that stay comparatively clearer. If you would like to explore those options, just let me know the sort of holiday you are imagining and I can suggest a few tailored alternatives.
