Antarctica Cruises - Your questions answered

Going to Antarctica is not something you do each year, so you probably have some questions. Here is some information that may help you decide .

Who goes on holiday to Antarctica?

Anyone over the age of 8 who can follow instructions. Antarctica is a protected area, and as such, listening to the guide and following instructions is non-negotiable. Cruise companies will have their own age limits, so check before booking.

Do you get off the ship?

Yes, you do. It will depend on the weather as to when and where, and as such, the itinerary is flexible to allow for this. You will head out on Zodiacs for wildlife viewing and shore landings to view the wildlife and landscape up close.

Do I need to be fit to do an Antarctica cruise?

Not overly, but you do need to be able to walk unaided on uneven and potentially slippery ground, and be comfortable in cold conditions. You will be getting in and out of Zodiacs, but the crew will explain how to do this safely and will be there to assist.

How long does it take to get from Ushuaia (Argentina) to Antarctica?

The crossing through the Drake Passage takes approximately 48 hours. Conditions range from relatively calm to rough, so be prepared for everything. It is all part of the adventure. If you suffer from motion sickness, select a cabin in the middle of the ship and consult your doctor – they may be able to prescribe you something to assist.

How close do you get to the penguins?

Very close. There's a rule in Antarctica that you mustn't touch or approach a penguin, but a penguin can approach you. Penguins are naturally curious, and humans aren't a threat to them. Sometimes they may waddle towards you if you give them space and let them decide.

Can I swim and snorkel in the water around Antarctica?

Yes, you can, but check that the cruise company offers this. Some offer a polar plunge from the beach, and others offer it straight off the ship or Zodiac.Diving is also offered by some cruise companies; however, you will need to be approved in advance to ensure you have the necessary experience for the conditions.

What type of temperatures can I expect?

Cruises operate in the Southern Hemisphere summer (November to March). You can expect temperatures typically between 5°C and -5°C, but the wind chill may make it feel colder. Come prepared with layers.

What type of clothing will I need?

Warm layers and a waterproof ski-type jacket and trousers. Waterproof outerwear can be hired in Ushuaia, so I recommend arriving at least the day before the cruise departs to arrange this.

What type of footwear will I need?

As part of the protections in place in Antarctica, special footwear is required when walking anywhere on the continent. Most cruise companies will provide waterproof expedition boots for shore landings. For on board, bring comfortable shoes or trainers with warm socks.

What can I do while cruising for two days through the Drake Passage?

Each cruise is different, but you can expect interesting talks from onboard experts, masterclasses, time to meet fellow guests, eat delicious food or relax with a book. Top tip: Don't miss the photography masterclass; it will come in handy once you get to Antarctica.

How long are Antarctica cruises?

It depends on the route you choose. A classic cruise to the Antarctic Peninsula typically takes between 10 and 12 days. Longer itineraries that may include South Georgia and the Falkland Islands can take between 2 and 3 weeks.

What is the best cruise to go on?

It depends on you and what you want to experience, both on and off the boat. There is a limited number of cruise companies with a permit to sail to Antarctica. These range from luxury cruises to small ships and expert-led cruises. I can talk you through the different options, so you can find the right cruise for you.

Antarctica really is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of place, and if it's somewhere you've been dreaming of visiting, don't put it off just because you don't know where to start. If you have questions, are curious about what it's really like, or aren't sure which cruise would suit you, just ask! I'm always happy to chat through the options.
