My Solo Adventure in Malta

Matt Howard on 14 Mar 2026

Malta is one of those rare destinations that truly offers something for everyone: families, couples and solo travellers alike. Despite its small size, it is rich in experiences, with historic cities, characterful fishing villages, clear turquoise bays and dramatic coastlines all within easy reach. It feels wonderfully manageable, yet never dull, which makes it a brilliant choice whether you are looking for a first overseas trip in a while or a new European favourite to return to again and again.

A Small Island With Big Experiences

Whether you are drawn to history, culture, adventure, beach time or simply the joy of discovering somewhere new, Malta really does have it all. You can spend your mornings wandering through UNESCO-listed streets and ancient fortifications, your afternoons out on the water or exploring secluded coves, and your evenings enjoying relaxed dinners in atmospheric harbourside restaurants. English is widely spoken, public transport is straightforward, and the island has a welcoming, laid-back feel that immediately puts visitors at ease.

Springtime in Valletta

I visited in March and the weather was ideal for exploring: warm enough for al fresco coffees and coastal walks, but still comfortable for sightseeing without the height-of-summer heat. One of my favourite moments was watching the midday cannon fire at the Saluting Battery in Valletta, looking out over the Grand Harbour as the city’s layered history is brought to life. Strolling through Valletta afterwards, with its golden stone buildings, narrow streets and little balconies, felt like walking through a living museum, yet with a modern café culture and vibrant atmosphere.

Gozo, Blue Grotto and Unforgettable Moments

Another highlight was a guided tour of Gozo, Malta’s more rural and tranquil sister island. Here, life moves at a gentler pace, with pretty villages, rolling countryside and dramatic coastal cliffs. We enjoyed an incredible lunch at a local farm, complete with home-grown wine and delicious regional produce, which gave a real taste of Maltese hospitality. Out on the water, exploring the Blue Grotto was unforgettable. The colour of the sea here is the most vivid shade of blue I have ever seen, glowing against the limestone caves and rock formations and creating the perfect setting for photos and quiet moments alike.
